Police to launch speed checks on electric bikes

09:36 30/01/2015

Police are preparing to implement speed checks on electric bikes, according to the Minister of the Interior Jan Jambon. The police are keen to put an end to “dangerous situations” arising from the use of electric bikes. The Federal Public Service Economy recently noted that several electric bikes can reach up to more than 25 km/h, the authorised limit.

Until now, owners of electric bikes have been free to cycle around the streets without fear of speed checks or punishment. The Federvelo federation and cyclists associations expect that the legal framework on the rights and obligations of electric bicycle owners to be ready for this summer. Police checks can then take place.
