Parking 58 closes its doors, beloved rooftop

Parking 58, the iconic multi-storey car park in the heart of Brussels, closes its doors on Monday for good. While the 600 parking spaces may not be missed, its rooftop with a panoramic view over the city surely will be, writes Bruzz. It has served as a regular hangout spot for many young people over the last 60 years.

Parking 58 was built during the World Expo in 1958. It was hardly used until the mid-60s, when the car started to take over the capital. Since then, it has provided parking for countless visitors to the city centre. But it is the free rooftop entry and unhindered access to sunlight in the summer that people will miss most.

“The car park itself has always been pretty ugly, but the rooftop terrace had something magical,” 58-year-old Brussels resident Colette Ledent told Bruzz.

Parking 58 has to make way for Brucity, an administrative centre of the City of Brussels, which some 1,500 employees will call their workplace by 2021.
