Obituary: Belgian Painter Roger Raveel (1921-2013)

13:36 30/01/2013

Contemporary artist Roger Raveel died today at the age of 91. Raveel was mainly active as a painter, but he also made visual and ceramic work and was active in literature. Raveel is considered one of the country's all-time greatest painters. Raveel's style evolved throughout his career, from abstract to figurative. Portraits of his wife and favourite model Zulma were a running motif throughout his work. He belonged to a generation of painters that also includes the recently deceased Raoul De Keyser and the late Jan Burssens. Raveel maintained close ties with the humanities and literary contemporaries such as Roland Jooris, Rutger Kopland and Hugo Claus. In his hometown of Machelen-aan-de-Leie, in East Flanders, there is a museum dedicated to Raveel's work.
