No Belgians departed for Syria in 2016

So far this year, no Belgians have left the country to fight in Syria, says the federal prosecutor Frédéric Van Leeuw in La Libre Belgique and La Dernière Heure. "No one has departed to that zone in 2016," confirms Van Leeuw (pictured), adding that most of the Syria fighters left Belgium in 2014 and 2015.

"We have to set our focus on the people coming back,” he says. “And we must not forget that the Islamic State has requested that its followers not go to Syria, but instead commit terror attacks in their own region.”
