Brussels is bracing itself for another summer of major road works likely to bring traffic chaos for commuters. City authorities traditionally take advantage of a 20 percent drop in traffic during the summer to make badly needed repairs to the heavily congested network.
Woluwe-Saint-Lambert/Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe is likely to be the worst affected area. The tunnel going under the Montgomery square will be closed for two months starting on July 6 forcing traffic to travel over-ground across the roundabout.
At the same time, the Brussels transport authority Stib/MIVB will be laying new tram tracks at the intersection of Avenue de Tervuren/laan and Boulevard du Souverain/Vorstlaan. Four of the five lanes coming into Brussels from Tervuren will be closed.
Rue de la Gallait/Gallaitstraat in Schaerbeek is closed for refurbishment until March 2010. New tram lines are also being laid on Boulevard Léopold III-Laan, periodically closing the big intersections over the next few months.
In Auderghem/Oudergem, repairs on the bridge above the E411 motorway at Rue Jules Cockx/straat will bring the number of lanes down from four to one. Starting on July 6, the works will last until the end of August.
Avenue du Port/Havenlaan by Tour & Taxis will be closed during the whole of July while new gas pipes are being laid.
Boulevard de l’Impératrice/Keizerinlaan in front of Brussels’ Central Station will be closed for refurbishing as part of the year-long plan to turn it into a pedestrian-friendly area.
