New cars less eco-friendly

The scrapping of federal government cash incentives to encourage drivers to buy energy-efficient cars at the end of last year has led to a dramatic fall in sales of eco-friendly vehicles, writes Flanders News. Belgians no longer opt for the most fuel-efficient and eco-friendly model when choosing a new car. For the first time in years, the average amount of carbon emitted by cars has risen from 123gr/km last year to 131.2gr/km. Previously, emissions had fallen sharply from 157gr/km in 2006 to 123gr/km in 2011. However, figures for the first eight months of this year suggest this downward trend has come to an end. Joost Kaesemans of motor industry federation Febiac told Sunday newspaper De Zondag that this was “a remarkable turnaround”.
