New 93km coastal bike path inaugurated in Flanders

A new 93km-long bicycle path has been opened in Flanders. The new route, one of eight Flemish "iconic cycle routes" (icoonfietsroutes) that will replace the 30-year-old long-distance cycling routes (LF, langeafstandsfietsroutes), is part of an initiative by Flanders to position itself as an international destination for cycling holidays.

Cyclists can now take the new coastal route that connects the Kustroute of the Netherlands to the Vélomaritime in France. Seven more new routes will be opened between October 2020 and July 2021.

The new routes will pay particular attention to the accessibility of departure and arrival points with public transport and connections with routes in Wallonia, the Netherlands and France. The signage along the routes will be two-way and will be completely renewed.

Signage of the old LF lines will be phased out from the autumn 2020 holidays and will disappear completely in early spring 2021.
