Netflix goes live in Belgium

11:25 19/09/2014

The American video-on-demand service Netflix became available to subscribers in Belgium and Luxembourg from midnight on Friday. Netflix announced its arrival shortly after midnight on Twitter. In a press statement, Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix, said: “We are proud to bring the television of the future to Belgium and Luxembourg. Belgian and Luxembourger viewers can now instantaneously access a multitude of films and series where and when they like.”

Since 2007, Netflix has offered its subscribers the possibility to stream films and TV series directly from the internet. In Belgium, customers will have to create an account on www.netflix.be. Once their payment details are registered, they will be able to access a catalogue listing thousands of films. Access to Netflix is also possible via its eponymous app that can be downloaded onto all devices with a connection to the internet: computers, tablets, smartphones, televisions, video game consoles.

The official price in Belgium for a basic Netflix account is €7.99. It costs slightly more for high definition and the facility to use more than one device simultaneously.

Netflix has been available in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden since 2012, and in the Netherlands since 2013. At the start of the week, the American video-on-demand service went live in Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland too.

Netflix has 50 million subscribers around the world, of which 70% are in the US. The service made a name for itself by offering original content, principally the series it produces itself: Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.
