Nearly half a million homes without high-speed Internet

16:06 28/08/2016

Despite the European Commission's digital agenda, which aims for all European citizens to have access to an internet connection of at least 30 Megabytes per second by 2020, there are still 435,000 homes in Belgium without a high-speed Internet connection, writes De Zondag.

The vast majority of the homes without high-speed Internet access are located in the Walloon Region (406,860), according to figures provided by federal minister of the digital agenda Alexander De Croo.

Broadband availabilty is especially low in rural areas, points out federal MP Roel Deseyn. "Because it's technically not very profitable for operators. But we are in favour of customisation, of finding other solutions, such as mobile Internet receivers or satellites attached to the home. But somehow the target must be met... Internet access is a fundamental right.”
