My job in Belgium: How much does a municipal gardener earn?

23:59 28/07/2016
We ask Bart Van Limbergen (29) from Niel, about his job in the great outdoors and how much he earns

What is your job?

As a gardener with the towns parks service, I am responsible for all the public parks and green spaces. Think, for example, of grass cutting, planting, weeding and all of the pruning work. Also the layout of these spaces is the responsibility of the parks service.

Do you like your job?

Of course! I really like how much variation there is in this job throughout the whole year. I have to admit I am an 'outdoors person' who doesn't like to sit still, so this job was made for me.

What do you think of your salary?

In general I am fairly satisfied with what I earn (€2,200 gross, €1,500 net with meal vouchers, hospitalisation insurance and cycling compensation). But there are times, I must admit, that we're not doing the cleanest of jobs. Often the weather in Belgium is not ideal, and yeah, for work in these conditions - which can also sometimes be exceptional - I would like to see a little bit extra in my pay packet. But don't get me wrong: that also applies for postmen, plumbers and roof workers.

How many hours per week do you work?

I work 38 hours per week.

Do you save?

Yes, but the amount fluctuates. Normally, I try to save more than €100 per month but some months that is not possible.

What is your biggest expense?

Without a shadow of a doubt, the mortgage repayment for our duplex-apartment takes the biggest bite out of our budget.

What can you absolutely not spend money on?

I would never spend money on game consoles. But that is logical, I have a busy social life and I'm hardly ever at home. Actually, it would be throwing money away.

What would you gladly spend your money on?

I would enjoy a nice meal or a weekend away.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Nothing extraordinary I think. I would want the same life as I have now. Although having said that, it would definitely include an extra holiday.
