Multiple appeals delay reconstruction of pedestrian zone, says Mayeur

10:54 20/09/2016

A new planning application for the redevelopment of the pedestrian zone is to be submitted "this autumn", said Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur on Monday during a city council meeting. Due to the many appeals filed against the redevelopment of the pedestrian zone, the works have been delayed for months, he says.

The City of Brussels needs a new planning permit in order to go through with its plans, as the previous one was revoked by the state council. "As a result, the work to make the pedestrian area greener and more beautiful has been delayed for months now," alderwoman for mobility Els Ampe told Bruzz. "Normally we should have started in March."

Once the new planning application has been submitted, in principle the work can start immediately, according to Ampe. "The contractor is ready. But this is Belgium, and new procedures may still be filed against the redesign.”

Opposition members are urging Mayeur to allow more opportunities for local residents to have a say in the new plan.

So they already have their (friendly) ducks in a row and don't have to wait for the permit to be approved, just filed? Politics, Belgian (and Mayeur) style as usual.
Has there been an article in the Bulletin about the very same Mr Mayeur, who is also head of Vivaqua and wants Brussels water prices to go up?
