Moving furniture/clothes etc. to UK/Ireland

Question

Hi,
We're thinking of moving from Brussels to Dublin at the end of the year and wonder if anyone has experience of moving from Belgium to Ireland or the UK.
We have beds, table/chairs, clothes, and kids' toys. Any ideas how much it would cost to ship it; hire a moving company; or rent a van(s) to drive home.
I have a feeling that when we start packing we'll find there's quite a lot of bulk but we have moved within Brussels before and most of it fitted in a large moving van.

I'd rent from Ireland, drive over, load up with friends (how Belgians do it) and you might have to rent a lift to do this too, then drive back. How much it will cost depends on m3 so size of van / lorry and number of hours you expect to rent. We've moved 2 times in 5 years, 45m3, all pack ourselves. The loading and unloading time has been a total of only 3 hours, it's very dependent on how well you pack, how well you label boxes, how efficiently you load the vehicle. I think you should be able to do it yourself for under 500 euro.

Thanks WinterLover,
very helpful. 500 would be great! Think it cost us that to move about 1km down the road in Ixelles (mostly due to the cost of renting a lift and fees paid to commune to allow us use a lift!)

Hi,
we moved from Ireland to belgium about 3 years ago and used a company called Careline. I am sure they would also do Belgium - Ireland.
When we moved to Ireland from Belgium we did it ourselves, renting a van from Ireland but we could only do that because my husband was already living in Dublin at the time and had a car. You can not (at least 3 years ago you couldn't) rent a van in ireland and drive over to the continent because you would not get car insurance. Since we had a car with car insurance in Ireland we could transfer the car insurance from our car to the rented van for the amount of time needed and our car stayed in a garage. Mind you ferry costs are not cheap either but getting the van insured will be your biggest problem.

We always moved ourselves but because we did not have a car in ireland anymore we could not rent a van and get it insured when we moved back to belgium. And we had a lot more stuff and 2 kids in the mean time so we did it with Careline and used a storage-to storage approach. They picked up our stuff at a storage in ireland and delivered it to a storage in belgium. We paid around 3000 euros for the lot (fullish 3 bedroom furnished house, storage of about 12 square meters) which was the cheapest I found at the time.

Hope this helps and sorry for the long answer.
