Most employees pay own teleworking costs

07:49 09/09/2015

Teleworking is on the rise in Belgium, as more and more employees occasionally work from home. That's on par with a worldwide trend which shows that more than half of employees also have a professional home office. Yet only one-third of their employers (33%) contribute to the cost of the home workplace, a new study shows.

In Belgium, too, the employer rarely provides reimbursement for the expense involved in the establishment and equipping of the home office. This costs their staff at least as much as one month's salary, say 35% of the respondents in Belgium, according to the study by Regus, the world's largest flexible workplace provider.

In June 2015, Regus surveyed more than 44,000 office workers from 100 countries, including nearly 300 in Belgium. "A well-equipped home office contributes to the productivity of the employee," concludes William Willems, managing director of Regus Belgium. "It is therefore advisable for companies to invest in teleworking, as it ultimately results in financial benefit – for themselves and the employees."

The costs of teleworking wouldn't be so drastic if ISPs in Belgium weren't so few and so incredibly expensive. This is yet another area (like supermarkets) where things would improve dramatically for consumers in Belgium if the market was allowed to become competitive. Imagine what would happen here if the French "Free" managed to enter the Belgian market.
