More jobs at Brussels Airport thanks to record year

11:25 12/08/2014

The number of passengers travelling through Brussels Airport so far this year increased by about 6,000 per day compared to the same period in 2013. The 5% increase in passengers makes this a record year for the airport and should lead to significant job creation, report Het Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen.

Between January and July, 2014, about 12.2 million passengers used Brussels Airport. "It looks like we will surpass 20 million passengers for the first time in 14 years," said spokeswoman Nathalie Van Impe. That would mean an increase of 900,000 passengers compared to last year, which could make room for as many as 600 new jobs, believes transport economist Eddy Van de Voorde.

The increase is in part due to the arrival of low-cost airline Ryanair to Brussels Airport in February. The company unleashed a price war and expanded the airport’s range of destinations and customers.
