More than half of drivers speed through Louise tunnel

11:00 17/10/2016

The Brussels police on Wednesday last week set up a speed check at the exit of the Louise tunnel, which runs under Place Louise towards Brussels South station. Of the 8,040 vehicles checked, 56% were travelling above the speed limit, writes Het Laatste Nieuws.

The police handed out a total of 230 tickets for the infractions, and revoked 10 licenses. One vehicle was clocked at 176km per hour, where only 50km per hour is allowed. Another motorist was caught driving 94km per hour, with an unbelted two-year-old in the passenger seat.

Six foreign drivers caught speeding each had to pay a €1,150 fine on the spot. One driver surpassed the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Why would anyone drive through there at 176? I'm baffled they could with all the traffic

Belgium is negligent. Set up speed cameras like most modern cities, impose the fines, and the city makes money to invest in its infrastructure.

This is because the speed limit on the inner ring is too low, and should be a more reasonable 70 kph, like it is on Blvd Woluwe, Souveraine, and other similarly structured thoroughfares. 50 kph defeats the purpose of even having the inner ring. When everyone seems to be breaking the law, odds are there is something wrong with the law.

Belgians speeding? Wow, that's really news, Toddler unbuckled in the passenger seat? That also means there was no child car seat as required by law. That too is hardly surprising.
