More Brussels Delhaize stores vandalised amid ongoing union conflict

20:42 14/06/2023

A further four Delhaize stores in Brussels have been vandalised, as the conflict between the supermarket group's management and its workers continues.

Delhaize announced earlier this year that it intended to franchise all of its stores, placing them under private and independent ownership that employees fear will result in a further decline of working conditions and pay and benefits.

A spokesperson for the Delhaize corporation said four of its franchise stores in Brussels were spray-painted with anti-management slogans, which the group called “pure vandalism”.

The stores in question are Proxy Delhaize Saisons and Couronne in Ixelles and Toison D'Or and Defacqz in Saint-Gilles.

This is not the first incident of vandalism against the corporate chain as the social conflict drags on, with Delhaize’s management refusing to back down from franchise plans and workers warning that the franchise model will spread to other sectors.

More reconciliation talks between unions and management are due to take place this week.
