Mons’ belfry re-opens after 32 years

10:46 03/07/2015

After 32 years of renovation and restoration work, Mons’ landmark Baroque belfry is opening again to visitors this weekend. Visitors will be able to access the belfry via a special centre on the history of the building, created as part of the Mons European Capital of Culture 2015 activities. A panaroma view of the city is open to visitors at the top of the belfry.

Around €7 million have been spent on restoring the belfry which dates from 1661 and is made up of 459,000 bricks. The 87-metre tall building is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. Only 50 people will be able to access the belfry at any one time. As a result, the city of Mons is laying on numerous activities in the surrounding park to make visits more pleasurable. This Saturday and Sunday, the site will open from 10.00.

32 years to restore one tower? Can you imagine telling this story to the Chinese? I wonder how long (and for how much) it would have cost them to renovate/restore one, single belfry. Truly shocking....

Well, at least they managed to finish it while Mons is still (unbelievable as it may seem) European Capital of Culture 2015.
