MOBIB

Question

I learned that a Metro ticket for 10 rides would cost normally 14 Euros, but that it would cost only 12,50 if charged on MOBIB. How does this work? Does this mean that I can have these 10 rides charged on my monthly abonnement? But how does the machine discern whether I'm using my monthly ticket or rather one of the 10 rides for my visitor?

Newstart77: If you have a monthly MOBIB abonnement, you can have the option of renewing the abonnement every month or you can add 10 rides onto the same card. You can in fact add various amounts of 10 rides to the card.
If you have a monthly abonnement already loaded that would take priority over any 10 rides also loaded.
There is no limit as to when the 10 rides have to be used by.
If for example, you are away for a week or more during any month it is cheaper to load 10 rides.

If you are using your MOBIB card to travel when you are accompanied by one or more others, you need to pass the card for each person travelling. The first pass will be set against your abonnement, each subsequent pass will cancel one of the 10 rides (unless it is within 1 hour of a previous pass of the MOBIB card as usual).

The STIB website explains how it works, especially in regard to the exit gates now in place at certain stations.
