Massive fish die-off in Brussels park

13:16 24/07/2014

Brussels Environment Institute yesterday removed 500kg of dead fish from the water at King Baudouin Park. The extreme heat of the past week caused the water level to fall to dangerous levels.

The fish were gathered near a drain in one of the park’s recently reconstructed canals. Unable to move from there due to the low water level, they did not get enough oxygen and died, writes Le Soir.

The Environment Institute is now taking measures to avoid a recurrence of the event, including the addition of a new installation to bring oxygen into the water and the enlargement of the drain openings so fish can pass through more easily.
