Major facelift for area between Botanique and North Station

16:02 31/10/2017

Works will begin next year on the renewal of Place Saint-Lazare and Square Victoria Regina in Saint-Josse, just north of the Botanique gardens. The plan includes new pedestrian areas and more green space.

Multiple streets come together on the traffic-heavy Saint-Lazare intersection, including Boulevard Saint-Lazare, Rue de Brabant and Rue de la Rivière. It is currently difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to traverse the streets involved.

When the urban renewal project was approved four years ago, the winning architectural design included a larger pedestrian area that would link the two squares and limit traffic to Rue de la Rivière. Mayor Emir Kir (PS), however, was sworn in immediately following the design contest and altered the planning permit request.

According to Anne Winterberg of the planning office, much of the original design has been retained, though traffic will still be allowed on Blvd Saint-Lazare. Works will begin next spring and take about two years to complete, she told Bruzz.
