long term retirement visa?

Question

My wife and I, US citizens, would like to leave this dangerous, gun-loving , Trump land for the comparatively safe land of Belgium. There is a visa for retirement for those who are self sufficient and though we are not rich, we are interested. It also requires a showing of ties to Belgium. We weren't born in Belgium, so other than many short visits in the past, we are not sure what we can show. Anyone with any experience in this area? or attorneys who can give us counsel?
Best regards...

Yes, we have lived in France for periods of time in the past, but Paris is tres cher and Brussels has most of what we seek. The States has lost much of its quality of life, that is, unless you are in love with a gun. Keep in mind there are more guns in circulation here than there are people. We see far greater freedom and safety in Europe notwithstanding the recent random incidents.

The system as stated was a bit daunting. As applied, it is easy. We applied for a Residence Visa under the "Retire in Belgium" program. We were told it would take up to 4 months. It took 2 weeks! We had booked other things for the intervening 4 months which we are now doing before we move to Tournai, Belgium. We have been in Belgium several times. Once we decided on Tournai, we visited there and spent 10 days learning a bit about the city and meeting people, one of whom even wrote a letter in support of our application. January... here we come!

To LONGINOJ: We are a retired American couple who are looking at spending a year or more in Tournai. What sort of reason did you give for proof of ties to Belgium? Are you American? Do you have travel emergency medical insurance or full health insurance for Belgium? How long are you staying? We would love to learn from your experience - could we meet you when we are in Tournai this summer, July 5?
You can reach me at heymariehammer@gmail.com Thanks.

Hello Madame & sir 'Ricmax',
hope you are still having a nice time in Belgium. I am writing you with a question concerning my American retired husband. I am Cy, Belgian and we married here 20years ago. My husband Stanlee is now 77, he just recently received his pension from the US and because of that (and because he can get medicare in the States, which doesn't count outside of the US) he is not entitled to Belgian mutuality anymore by the end of this year 2021.
I have been looking into private insurance, but have been unsuccessful so far. How did you get health insurance residing in Belgium?
It would be of great help to us.
Sincerely,
Cy & Stanlee.
