Lights for Rights anti-Trump protest this weekend

14:00 17/01/2018
This Sunday, Bourse is the place to be to voice your dismay with the Trump administration

Lights for Rights is back, with a one-year anniversary of its solidarity protest with the Women’s March on Washington. The public is invited this Sunday, 21 January, to take part in the action on Place de la Bourse in Brussels.

Last year’s action (pictured) drew 2,000 people to downtown Brussels for chanting and singing in protest at the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Lights for Rights asks participants this year to bring their pussy hats, candles and protest signs once again.

“Trump’s presidency has brought with it a stunning abuse of power, myriad conflicts of interest and a dangerous level of cultural upheaval,” says Pauline Manos, the chair of Democrats Abroad. “The last year was a test of who we are as a country. Our institutions and resolve have proven their strength, but the fight continues. We’ll be doing all we can in 2018 to mobilise Americans living in Belgium on behalf of the Democratic party.”

This weekend sees women’s marches and other protest activities taking place across the US and around the world. The Brussels event is from 16.30 to 18.00. The Indigo Creative choir will lead the crowd in the protest song “Quiet”, so start practicing.
