late return of ID cards after leaving belium

We left Belgium for the uk in april 2016.
We did not return our ID cards as we thought (correctly as it turns out) that the UK immigration authorities would need to see them.
Hopefully we should soon complete the UK immigration process.
We will then travel back to the commune to return them and get the model 8 letter.
Should we expect to get a fine?
