Large snapping turtle caught in Jette

14:13 06/06/2016

The fire department in Jette captured a potentially dangerous turtle that had been spotted walking around the Brussels commune for weeks, writes Bruzz. The large animal has since found shelter in the popular Belgian zoo Pairi Daiza.

The common snapping turtle, with the scientific name Chelydra serpentina serpentina, was seen on several occasions, calmly strolling through the streets of Jette. The fire department was able to humanely pick up the animal and transfer it to its new home at the zoo, writes La Dernière Heure.

The animal is carnivorous and has very powerful jaws. The species' natural habitat is in North America and the south of France, which suggests that it may have once been a pet that was released into the wild after becoming too large.
