Lagging employment rate in Belgium for over-55s

11:44 30/03/2015

In 2014, the employment rate for people over the age of 55 in Belgium was 42.7%, an increase of 1% compared with the previous year, and an increase of 5.4% compared with a decade ago, according to figures from the FPS Economy.

Despite the increase, Belgium continues to lag behind the European average, which is an employment rate of 50.1% for those over 55. By the end of this decade, Belgium’s aim is to reach an employment rate of at least 50% for people between the ages of 55 and 65.

Belgium’s employment rate for the over-50s, however, is currently 54.7%, a 2.5% increase over 2013.
