Kenyan Eric Kering wins Brussels Marathon

22:26 02/10/2016

Eric Kering is the winner of Sunday's Belfius Brussels Marathon. The Kenyan won the popular event with a personal best time of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 50 seconds. Belgian runner Willem Van Schuerbeeck finished in second place, while fellow Belgian Virginie Vandroogenbroeck came out the winner of the women's competition.

The 13th edition of the Belfius Brussels Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday was a great success, drawing some 12,500 runners from 61 countries to the European capital. With more than 7,000 participants, the half marathon was the most popular run.

A total of 1,700 full marathon runners departed from the start at Cinquantenaire at 9.00 and followed the 42.195km course through the heart of the city. The runners passed along the Royal Palace and Justice Palace before heading down Avenue Louise towards green areas including Bois de la Cambre, Val Duchesse Park and Kapucinnebos.

The runners returned to the city centre via Avenue de Tervueren and pounded over the cobblestones of the historic Grand Place before crossing the finish line in front of the Bourse at Boulevard Anspach.

I am not opposed to sport BUT how many marathons can this small city tolerate? Closing down huge sections of the city to cars, certain metro lines were stopped for lengthy periods with stupid signage (only in French so pity the tourist and info stuck to a lamp post at ground level so not even visible), huge traffic lines on the Ring because access denied entering the city, it was a mess as usual. Let us not count the police duty -- in a city with limited police numbers, it seemed ridiculous to group huge police numbers at intersections when the country is on "alert". Until the police numbers are ramped up, I suggest putting these marathons around some small town outside of BXL (Louvain, Namur, Lier....) and stop taking Brussels hostage.
