'Justice, help!': 600 lawyers protest at Brussels court

14:01 20/03/2018

About 600 lawyers and magistrates gathered outside Brussels' central court house on Tuesday to form the message "Justice help!" in giant letters - in a protest about underfunding of the Belgian justice system.

Protestors say they have been complaining to justice minister Koen Geens about a lack of resources for the past three years. "With a lack of means, justice becomes injustice," one sign read outside the Justice Palace.

Magistrates say support staff positions that have been vacated are left unfilled, increasing the workload burden on others.

They also complain about old, unreliable computer systems. The system used by the courts is not compatible with that used by the police, they say.
