I'm planning a trip to Japan and have heard how crazily expensive it is. So I'd like to understand how much I should approximately budget for a simple hotel (say European 3 star, Ibis-like). Thanks
From $86 / night
My experience on Japan?
Considering how obsessively focused are on personal hygiene even the very low budget hotels are probably cleaner than the Royal Palace in Brussels (okay I am exaggerating a bit but I give an idea...). I stayed in Hotels, Guesthouses, Ryokans and they were all spotless even the cheap ones. SO don't be pulled off by lower stars.
I actually found the country quite reasonable. If you have the railway pass to travel around (cheap for tourists) and normal restaurants, you'll find the prices are like western Europe
Try Japanese capsule hotels. Website:https://www.youcouldtravel.com/travel-blog/where-to-stay-in-tokyo-for-to...
Ask Embassy of Japan in Brussels. Website:http://www.be.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/aboutus_embassy.html

I've been 10 times in Japan. You can sleep for 20€/night to 2000€/night... It depends on your budget. 10 years ago I used Lonely planet. Now, the vast majority of the hotels/youth hostels, capsule hotels in Japan are on booking.com. Japanese ryokan are not always on booking so you have to search on the web a little bit.
Approximate budget is easy to get from Booking.com, Expedia, Trivago, Opodo, websites of "European 3 star, Ibis-like" chains. Or Google Maps for where you are staying, type "hotels" and enter dates for an overview.
