How much does Barack Obama earn?

In honour of Wednesday's “Obama-thon” in Belgium, Wage Watchers has a look at how much the American president earns on a yearly basis.

As President of the United States, Barack Obama earns an annual base salary of $400,000 (about €290,135). This comes with a healthy onslaught of benefits however: a generous allowance of $150,000 (€109,350) for yearly expenses, a tax-free travel budget of $100,000 (€72,500) and an entertainment budget of $20,000 (€14,500).

According to the president and Michelle Obama’s tax forms, which are a matter of public record, the family’s income in 2012 was $608,611 (€441,400).

President Obama also brings in a good amount of income thanks to the books he has published. Last year alone, he earned $273,000 (€198,000) in book sales.

In 2012, the Obamas donated €108,830 of their income to charities and paid €81,400 in taxes. A rough estimate of President Obama’s net worth is $11.83 million (€8.6 million).
