Hospitalia and cost of labour

Question

Hoping you can help... Just found out I am pregnant (just 5 weeks) and we have only been covered for hospitalia for the last week... I understand that means I will be covered for the cost of the birth (as the 6 month waiting will have elapsed) but are there any additional costs I can expect? E.g if I request a private room how much is that likely to set me back? Haven't decided on which hospital yet but Edith cavell is the nearest... Also, I have had a euromut policy for the last 6 months but we've only just got round to sorting hospitalia if that makes any difference...
Thanks v much in advance

If you came from another EU or EEA country, say the UK, then you are covered by the European reciprocal healthcare thing. Which I think means that you'll get reimbursement from a Mutuelle at Conventionné rates. no, I don't know how you' go about this.

See:

Or:

(which is typically vague)

If you came from outside the EU, you need to make sure that your existing healthcare coverage was still in place, or that you had made suitable arrangements for the 6/9 months.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Brussels Childbirth Trust yet...
Good source of support and advice.

Yes BCT is great but they don't deal with the issues surrounding mutuelle reimbursements, choosing a hospital or type of pre-natal care.

I think the reimbursements system remains a mystery to the vast majority of the population! It's that you never really know what you're going to be charged for until you get the bill.

If you opt for a home birth here, depending on your mutuelle, you might in fact end up in credit, I know someone paid for a home birth, all she paid for was the travel costs of midwives. She used Bolle Buik.
