Hospital supplements higher in Brussels and Wallonia

10:43 07/10/2014

A patient who opts for a single room in a hospital in Flanders rarely pays a supplement of more than 100% of the total bill. In Wallonia and Brussels, however, single rooms often come with supplemental fees of 150% and even up to 400%, according to figures from the Christian Mutuality (CM), which compiled a list of the supplement policies per hospital.

Hospital supplements in Belgium have risen sharply in recent years. An earlier study by the Socialist Mutuality showed that the price of a single room increased by 26% between 2006 and 2013.

In 2013, a patient in Belgium paid an average of €1,395 out of pocket to stay in a single room, or five times more than the cost of a double room, for which no supplemental fees are charged.
