Home schooling (in english) in Brussels/Belgium

Question

Does anyone have any help, advice or information about home schooling British children in Brussels/Belgium? We are considering the options for our 11 year old daughter who is having problems with a french school. The international schools are too expensive so we are now looking at home schooling as a possible option. Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance...

There is homeschooling in Belgium but I am afraid it does not apply to british/english speaking students. Only French, German, Dutch speaking children are allowed home schooling because yearly official testing/assessment is only available in those languages.

However, I am a regular tutor for English speaking students who are attending school in French. Maybe you should try getting some help before pulling her out from traditional schooling.

Hello. I do know of English-speaking families who home school their children. I know they were inspected by the Belgian regional education inspectors. Can you ask advice on the legal side of it from the education department of the region you live in? Good luck with finding out more.

Hi. I know that the Christian Center helps to host activities (field trips, etc.) for children being home schooled in English in Belgium. Iam sure if you contact them they can put you in touch with someone who knows how it works. (Many of the children who are part of the homeschool co-op program do not necessarily attend the church. It is a social outlet for them, also).

Alisanna's info is not correct. Tests are not annual and it is not the case that only French, Dutch and German-speaking students are 'allowed' to home educate.

I confirm. Alisanna's info is not correct. Any family is allowed to homeschool in Belgium, regardless of languages spoken or taught.
What age are your children, and where are you living?

If interested, you are welcome to join a coffee morning or an English book party next week. We are coming together with a few families that homeschool and prepare for IGCSE and AP exams, as well as for French and Mandarin Language tests. We live near Leuven.

Hi Tiptopmama,
I am also thinking of home schooling my 13 year old son who is struggling in the French school system, and I also live near Leuven. I am interested in your group, and knowing more about preparing for the IGCSE´s etc.
