Hardly any lifeguards at the coast this weekend
Despite forecasts for warm, sunny weather this coming weekend, the coastal towns will only call on the services of some 125 lifeguards. That's one-quarter of the number of lifeguards on duty during an average peak weekend in the summer. Half of the beaches won't call on any lifeguards and just ban swimming altogether. According to the mayors of these coastal towns, employing a lifeguard outside of the vacation period is far too costly. The hotel and restaurant industry reacted with great disappointment and pointed to the fact that Tourism Flanders has stopped subsidising security at the coast.
