Half of Saint-Gilles prison guards back to work despite accord

09:49 01/06/2016

Despite the fact that, as of today, the unions no longer recognise the ongoing strike action in the prison of Saint-Gilles, only half of the prison staff has returned to work, says Filip Dudal of the Christian trade union for public sector workers ACV-CSC in De Morgen.

The strike in the Brussels and Walloon prisons has gone on for five weeks. Since the Flemish unions and the French-speaking liberal union SLFP on Monday signed a new protocol agreement for the prison system, the unions announced they would no longer support or recognise the strike as of 1 June.

This morning, however, only about half of the guards at the prison of Saint-Gilles showed up to work.
