Grand Place to get major facelift

11:14 19/03/2014

May 5 marks the start of a major restoration project for several facades on Brussels’ most famous square, the Grand Place. First, house numbers one to seven will be restored, taking around 190 days to complete. The next 90 days will be devoted to house numbers 34 to 38.

During the project, the buildings will be covered with decorative sails with pictures of the current facades. The cleaning will be done using a hydro pressure device that will not damage the bricks. Where necessary, joints will be renewed, carved elements replaced and frameworks restored. The abundant gold trim will also get a good polish.

The restoration project comes with a price tag of €1,645 million, 80% of which will be funded by the Belgium’s Royal Committee for Monuments and Sites.

All businesses remain accessible during the duration of the works.
