Garden advice

Question

Tackling a garden in Laeken. Not much of a gardener but I plan to do it myself and go for low maintenance. I dug it up today. The soil seems moist. It was easy to dig.

Would like to sow plants that will last and come back year after year(shrubs/flowers). How easy or difficult are roses?

Any advice on what suits the soil in the area and will be easy to maintain? Fertiliser? Weedkiller? Other needs?

I like colourful plants.

A good tip is to look around at your neighbours and make a note of what is growing vigorously in gardens adjacent to yours. Perhaps PH test your soil to verify acid/alkalinity - which will give you an idea of what will grow best (kits available in most garden centres). Then work out if soil is clay or free draining. Then you need to consult some good books, websites such as the following. Good luck!
