Gap Year Flight Query

My daughter is planning to spend her gap year working in Malaysia. We enquired with our travel agent about her flight and were told that they don't sell tickets for such a long period (from August - August next year). Furthermore it would be practical if she had a flexible ticket allowing her to book her flight home nearer the time.

Has anyone been in the similar situation, and if so, what would you advise?
