Gaga and Bennett sing cheek to cheek on Brussels’ Grand Place

11:06 23/09/2014

The unlikely duo of jazz legend Tony Bennett, 88, and pop diva, Lady Gaga, 28, crooned their way through highlights from their new jazz album Cheek to Cheek in a thirty minute show on Brussels’ majestic Grand Place on Monday evening.

The concert, which was filmed in front of an audience around 5,000-strong, will, claim their promoters, eventually be broadcast around the world. During the show, Gaga kept it simple, wearing a gold cocktail dress throughout. The duo sang numbers by Duke Ellington and Cole Porter, among others.

For a nine-minute press conference for the show, Gaga arrived dressed head to toe in blue velvet with a 2-metre train and held hands with Tony Bennett while they reflected on their album and jazz. “When I began writing music for the music industry,” said Gaga, “I became known as the quirky girl from downtown New York. So I tailored my music to be that way, to get noticed, to be able to travel more and play more shows. I feel liberated. It's been over eight years and I've not been singing out. But Tony will not accept any less than all of me.”

Bennett added: “I started the very same way as she did, with thousands of people cheering. Later on I said I want to keep it in a simple way. Instead of the big stadiums, I'd like to play in fine acoustical homes."

On Sunday evening, Gaga had posed for fans on the balcony of her suite at Brussels’ Steigenberger Grandhotel dressed in a large, frizzy black wig and a silk negligee.
