Freight transport accounts for one-quarter of Brussels CO2 emissions

About one-quarter of the CO2 and fine particulate matter emitted by traffic in Brussels comes from freight vehicles, write La Libre Belgique and Le Soir, based on a report from the Brussels Studies Institute (BSI).
The researchers conclude that freight vehicles, which currently represent 14% of the region’s traffic, are responsible for up to 25% of CO2 emissions, including 41% of particulate matter (PM10) and 33% of the emission of ultrafine particles (PM2.5).
According to BSI, the number of freight vehicles in Belgium is expected to increase by as much as 68% between 2008 and 2030, with a parallel increase in pollution caused by freight traffic. The researchers are therefore asking Brussels Mobility to give special attention the issue.

Since the vast majority of large trucks are passing through from France, Luxembourg, Holland, and Germany, these trucks should pay a toll (like in France) for the use of our roads. We have to maintain these roads and much traffic congestion is caused by trucks. Yes, many of the trucks are going to/from Antwerp (shipping) but freight trucks should pay for the use of our roads.
Freight vehicles will increase because the demand is going very high and there is no doubt about that. But in adding and expanding they need to make sure they don't harm the environment, they need to reduce their emission and pollution. I agree that they need to give a special attention to this matter because this is really important. The demand for freight will really increase so they need to address to this issue.
