Flemish language support at Zaventem Commune

Question

A fairly typical question I am afraid.
Does anyone know of a person who can accompany us to the Zaventem commune when we return our Belgian ID cards.
The people at the commune always try to be helpful by asking extra questions, but our lack of Flemish always then causes problems.
Payment is offered of course.

Hi,
I can help you out. I am Flemish speaking and I am free next week if it is urgent.
Best,
Isabelle

I have heard they speak English, but it might depend on the person in question.

Anyway, the official language in Flanders is Dutch. 'Flemish' doesn't exist.

Are you sure you have Belgian Id cards?

If you are returning residents cards and leaving the country there is usually no need to attend the gemeentehuis.

Wikipedia is not always right.

The language is Dutch

In fact the Wikipedia article is correct as it names the language as Dutch.

It names Flemish as a dialectal variation of a language but states clearly Dutch is the language.

The language of flanders is Dutch. Zaventem is in flanders. Dutch is the language of the municipality so respectfully the language should be called by its name.

Try Google Translate app on a smartphone. You talk one language, it talks back another, and it is surprisingly good.

Thank you very much for the response Isabelle. It might be several weeks before we go to the commune.
Perhaps you could contact me directly at

To the poster that mentioned that to return residents cards, I do not need to attend the commune.
How do I return them and get the official letter stating that I have returned them?

What official letter? I ve returned several residents cards and no receipt.

A family member posted theirs and has email confirmation.

Why do you need an official letter anyway,
