Five-year ban for driver who filmed himself at 248kph

23:36 13/02/2018

A man who posted a video of himself speeding at 248kph on the Brussels ring in his dad's company car has been banned from the wheel for five years.

The 22-year-old from Jette must also work 150 hours of community service at a rehabilitation clinic for road victims, resit his driving theory test and undergo a psychiatric examination.

A court in Halle heard that the man had mounted a GoPro video camera in the back seat of the car to record him reaching a peak speed of 248kph at night between Ruisbroek and Sint-Peeters-Leeuw, more than double the legal speed limit on the ring.

He posted the video on Facebook, prompting widespread condemnation when the clip went viral. The vehicle, which belonged to his father's business, was seized and the company ordered to pay a €1,000 fine.
