Fire Insurance - Process from A to Z....

Question

Hello - we had a significant fire at our house 2 weeks ago. we are covered for most of the damages, and I wanted to see if anyone has had to go through this experience in Brussels/Belgium? (hopefully not - but you never know!) I am not sure what to anticipate in terms of next steps for timing/payment/overall process? Any advise in terms of the "big picture" process would be really helpful THanks!!!

Your insurance company may have already had their expert examine the damage. You would be well advised to hire your own expert. We also had a major fire. The insurance company's expert didn't bother to tell us certain things that would have cost the company money. Fortunately we had our own expert. We didn't know, for example, that the company would pay for a container to take all damaged goods away, or that if there was smoke damage to the interior of a TV set that they would also cover things like that. The two experts sat down together and negotiated what we would be covered for. We could never have done that on our own. Remember, the company expert is working for the company and not for you. It may cost you a bit of money but it the long run you will greatly benefit from having your own expert. He will examine your policy and tell you what you are entitled to. They are listed in the Yellow Pages.
