Fewer commuters and fewer jobs in Brussels

For the first time, more than half of the jobs in Brussels are filled by a Brussels resident, which means there are fewer commuters to the capital. But the total number of jobs in the city is also on the decline, according to a survey by the FPS Economy, writes the French newspaper L'Echo.

Ten years ago, commuters held 55% of the jobs in Brussels. The survey shows that in 2015 there were 701,932 jobs in the European capital, or 18,200 fewer than in 2014 and the lowest figure since 2010.

The number of jobs on the outskirts of Brussels, on the other hand, continues to rise, especially in Walloon Brabant, where the number of jobs has gone up by 31% over the last 15 years. In Flemish Brabant, the number of jobs has stagnated over the last five years, while jobs in East Flanders rose 20% in 15 years.
