Exporting a car from Belgium

Question

I want to buy a second hand car in Belgium in order to export it. I will need Belgian transit plates and insurance to drive it to destination country. I am registered in Belgium. My question is: Can I obtain transit plates(export plates by being resident in Belgium?

Registered Belgian residents cannot obtain Belgian transit plates. You will have to buy the car exactly as if you are intending to use it in Belgium, insuring it and getting normal Belgian rear plate from the DIV by post (and adding your own front plate).

You can then export it and start the process of reregistering it in the destination country. Remember to return the rear plate to the DIV once the car has been exported as otherwise you remain liable for the continuing road tax on it even though it is no longer in the country.
