Eurostadium unlikely to materialise before Euro 2020

10:38 29/03/2017

The plan to have Belgium's new national Eurostadium completed in time to host the opening match of the 2020 European championship appears to have fallen through after Flemish minister for public works and transportation Ben Weyts refused to sell the grounds that are crucial for the construction of the stadium on the Parking C lot in Grimbergen, writes De Morgen.

The deadline for the 2020 European championship is now unfeasible, according to Brussels finance minister Guy Vanhengel. "Without the new stadium at Heysel's Parking C, UEFA will select another host city over Brussels for Euro 2020," he explained last week in the Brussels Parliament.

Weyts' party N-VA has now requested an investigation into the possibility of renovating the existing King Baudouin Stadium, but that is not an option, according to project developer Ghelamco.
