EU summit moved due to toxic fumes at Europa building
Belgium
20:00 18/10/2017
An EU summit taking place in Brussels on Thursday and Friday has changed venue at the last minute, after noxious fumes made staff fall ill twice in the past week.
The meeting of European leaders has been shifted from the European Council's new Europa building to the neighbouring Justus Lipsius site "as a precautionary measure".
Last Friday, 15 kitchen staff were hospitalised after inhaling poisonous fumes due to a ventilation problem. Emergency services were called out again on Wednesday and 24 staff taken to hospital, suffering from vomiting, sore eyes and breathing problems.
The agenda for this week's meeting remains unchanged, with debates on Brexit, Iran, Turkey, trade and migration.
