End of roaming charges within the Benelux?

12:45 07/08/2013

Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are planning to axe roaming charges within the Benelux, although no date has yet been mentioned by the Benelux Office. "The three Benelux countries have expressed their intention to abandon roaming charges within their area," said the Belgian deputy secretary-general of the Benelux, Luc Willems. Phone bills should decrease significantly, at least for people who frequently cross borders within the Benelux. The CD&V party had first filed a proposal to abolish roaming charges within the Benelux back in 2008, but the case now seems to be gathering momentum. "In late September, we will meet with the competent ministers from all three countries," says Willems. "It very much depends on the European Commission. The commissioner in charge of telecoms, Neelie Kroes, has hinted that she wanted to review European roaming regulations before the end of the legislature”.
