Show of 85 oils, watercolours and drawings from London's Victoria & Albert Museum
Constable (1776-1837) was never more revolutionary than when making preliminary oil sketches directly from nature. No artist before him had used oil in those circumstances, and few after him have equalled the freedom and vigour of his brush strokes or managed to evoke the changing, atmospheric quality of light as he did. This show includes full-scale preparatory oils for Constable’s two most celebrated paintings The Hay Wain and The Leaping Horse, and a generous selection of his marvelous cloud studies, among much else.
