Brazil’s indigenous population is the subject of a major Europalia exhibition presenting archaeological and contemporary artifacts – ritual objects to everyday paraphernalia – of enormous variety, reflecting the immense diversity of the peoples they represent. As to intangible heritage – music, dance, customs and ceremonies – when still intact, it usually reaches audiences in recorded form, but not this time. On three consecutive evenings, Mehinaku and Kayapo Indians, the former from the Amazon Rainforest, the latter from the plains, will perform extracts of their ritual songs and dances. An introduction to the performances will be given by Belgian anthropologist Gustaaf Vererswijver, one of the exhibition’s curators.
