Emine Erdogan shopping spree stops traffic in Brussels

06:59 07/10/2015

While the Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Belgium this week to meet with Belgian prime minister Charles Michel and King Philippe and to visit the European Commission, his wife Emine took the opportunity yesterday to go shopping on Brussels' Avenue Louise, causing temporary disruption to traffic, according to LaCapitale.be.

Black minivans belonging to Erdogan's security entourage “took over the district for about an hour ”, grumbled Thierry Balsat, Saint-Josse city council member, on his Facebook page.

Trams came to a standstill and many drivers were forced to wait. Some customers were even denied entry to certain stores because the Turkish first lady was shopping inside.

How very silly. If she had gone out on her own nobody would have a clue who she is. But then, perhaps that is what all the fuss is about.

There is a sizable Turkish population in Brussels, including Kurds and (former?) members of the PKK. So I can understand why she was given protection. But I would like to know why and where she went on a 'shopping spree' on Avenue Louise. Brussels is hardly Paris, Milan, London, Berlin or New York when it comes to shopping.
